Ralph Lauren established his reputation as the most "American" of designers with his many takes on American iconography. 
An Indian blanket inspired textile is used for this hooded cape with large faux silver Navajo buttons and braided leather ties. This cape is essentially a large rectangle folded in half and slashed for entry with the addition of an oversized hood. The back has a central pattern woven into the textile and all the edges are blanket stitched in natural cotton cording. Heavy Wool/Cotton blend.

French  1920's Japanesque Art deco floral lame broche and cerise chiffon velvet kimono inspired opera coat. Japonism is the influence of Japanese art, fashion and aesthetics on Western culture. The term is used particularly to refer to Japanese influence on European art, especially in impressionism, and in fashion especially in the early 20th century.
Cut as an oversized slashed square with attached deep velvet sleeves. No closures. Lined in silk chiffon.

Elizabeth de Senneville had a cutting edge boutique in Les Halles, in 1980's Paris just around the corner from Yohji Yamamoto's tiny first shop when they area was quite seedy, strewn with sex shops and hobos. 
She came from an aristocratic French family and her designs were an 1980's version of techno-futurism. All her customized textiles were specially milled for her and her simple cuts were fastened with velcro closures. She had one of the earliest industrial style "Concept" stores with all products geared toward the future and the upcoming century.
This full cut evening shirt has square Velcro closures on a computer code generated red lame jacquard base. Her clothes were fully cut for wear by both men and women.

Simple, childlike and charming Italian straw hat from the 1950's when people actually "dressed up" to go to the beach.
A "Mr. Bill" type figure is felt decorated (stapled!) onto a cone shaped straw with an orange pom pom topper. There is a pale yellow nylon ribbon that runs over the hat and under the brim to tie as desired. Charming and ridiculous in the best way. 11" across, Height 8". Excellent condition. 1960's Italy.

Thierry Mugler's dramatic white cotton pique sun dress with assymetrical swirl cut outs on strapless bodice with full dipping hem circle skirt. Bodice is boned for support and snaps up the back. Hem dips in front and has self belt with antique silver buckle. Size 38 France.

Galanos' Charming Chrome Yellow silk chiffon set with pin tucked shirt and 5 ply chiffon bias cut skirt. Blouse is completely pin tucked with 2 chest pockets and heavy silk top stitching. The top stitching is also repeated on the waist band of the skirt. Simple bias A line skirt with 5!!! layers of picot edged silk chiffon. Galanos quality is legendary and his customers felt the quality when they purchased his garments. Elegant ensemble, beautifully crafted and finished throughout. 1970's USA.
